[TG11] Interfacing with Yanmar 3JH40 motor

installing two new Yanmar 3JH40 engines on a Catamaran and wish to interface them to the Raymarine plotter (eS127).
This is a new engine and information is not available on the Raymarine ECI site. Can you confirm if this engine can interface direct to the Raymarine plotter exchanging engine monitoring information in NEMA format direct to the Seatalking data bus – or not, and if an ECI-100 is required (I understand it may not be with this new Yanmar NEMA interface.

Can you please confirm if this is possible and what connectors are needed.

Smart Pilot X30 losing calibration

I have an SPX30 and an ST70 controller. Recently I started having a problem with the autopilot not maintaining course. It suddenly made a 30 degree course alteration, and the fluxgate compass was off by around 30 degrees. I ran the calibration procedures, after which the fluxgate agreed with the binnacle compasses as well as the gps. The system operated normally for the rest of the day. A few days when the ST70 booted up it indicated "calibration needed" and the fluxgate was again reading more than 30° off. This time I didnt have time to do the circles so I just synced it with the gps, and it worked for a while, and then started going out of calibration.

Yesterday I was looking at the compass calibration field and I found that there was already a -100° manual offset, which I assume was done the previous owner. I increased it to -130 to get it to match my binnacle compass which was reading 60°. After a few minutes the fluxgate compass started increasing and after a few minutes it was reading 68° even though the boat was tied to the dock. At some point as I was scrolling through settings that manual offset was lost, so suddenly the compass was reading 172° when the boat was pointing 60°.

I located the fluxgate compass to look for potential interference and found it had been installed right next to the batteries, at waterline, facing forward. (Is it acceptable to have it so close to the batteries? I believe it was factory installed there by Jeanneau.)
I tested the fluxgate with an ohm meter and it checked out as per the guide.

I am planning to make another attempt at calibration when I take the boat out this weekend, but I was hoping I could get some advice as to what else I should test or look for.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Element 9 HV digital depth loss

Hi,
Bought my first ever Raymarine product. I am having an issue with depth loss. Lets say I am fishing in 600ft of water but I only want to see the top 100' so I change depth to manual and when I hit the + button to where the bottom is no longer on the screen the digital depth goes away. Comes back when bottom is back on the screen. Using auto depth and zoom is worthless because the picture is horrible. How can this be fixed?

[LW11] Raymarine VHF Manuals - Suggestion

Could a sentence be added to the RM manuals for VHF radios to state what size of jack plug for the external speaker is required. It used to be 3.5mm for RM 54 VHFs.

Looks like its 2.5mm now, but could you confirm? if there has been a change. A single sentence in the manual would have been so helpful on Saturday afternoon.

[DG11] Wind speed showing boat speed

$

Hi,
I have a ST60+, software version 7.03, boat speed and depth are working fine but wind speed and wind direction are not working. Wind speed is showing 0.00 at anchor (with wind) and shows exactly the same figure as boat speed when sailing or motoring (under true wind setting). Wind direction doesn't reflect reality, mainly showing straight in the 60° range even when the wind is from behind.
Both wind direction and speed sometimes work, but very rarely, when it does it's for a few seconds and then wind speed will drop slowly to 0 again.
I purchased a new wind transducer after it's been tested by a raymarine agent who said it was faulty. Turns out that the new wind transducer didn't solve the problem.
Tested voltage behind the display: red 7.94 / green 5.0-5.5 / blue 2.2-3.5 / yellow 2.5-3.0 all in the range apart the red which just below 8.0. Is that ok? I have tested on the conection at the base of the mast and have the same figures. But haven't tested the voltage at the top of the mast.
I mounted the display on a friends boat and it works fine. I have redone all connection behind display and base of mast. I checked the dealer calibration settings, all good, wind factor is set to 0.7.

Thanks in advance for your help.
Max.

[LW11] Evo100 Wheel Pilot and Rudder Reference Unit Review

$

Fitted the Evo 100 wheel pilot to a 31ft, 5000kg yacht. Over the past two years it has worked very well in conditions up to close hauled in a F6 and down wind in F5 with strong tidal currents adding to the fun and waves. Single handing, the wheel pilot will hold the boat on course whilst I sort out the sails and get them trimmed. Always tricky because there will be a while when I have only one sail deployed so trim is completely out of the question. This hasn't been a problem. Equally, less than perfect sail trim doesn't seem to be an issue for the wheel drive.

However, I wondered if it could be fine tuned so went back to our local electronics supplier, Hudson Marine in the Solent for advice.

They suggested 3 things:

1. Move the gyro compass to the middle of the yacht (fore and aft).

2. Fit a rudder reference unit (RRU)

3. Update the software on the P70, ACU and gyro compass

The gyro compass was originally mounted under the coaming between the primary winch and the stern. Safe and free of electrical items it seemed a good location. However, Hudson marine suggested that since a yacht turns around its fin keel, the stern will initially move the opposite way and this can throw a modern gyro compass out. A good look around the boat suggested that under the heads sink unit was also free of electrical items, some 3 metres further forward and a 1 metre lower. This was an easy change as the network cable reached the new location.

Next came fitting an rudder reference unit (RRU). This proved to be more of a problem as the yachts sugar scoop design left little room around the rudder shaft for mounting a RRU despite my best efforts. The solution was a second rudder arm just for the RRU. New ones are rather expensive and grossly over engineered for this purpose, so I decided to make my own. Using a steel split collar and a piece of u shaped channel I spent a morning in my shed bench fitting the parts together and making a platform for the RRU.

Proceeding to sea for the first time and engaging the wheel pilot I sat back to see what difference the changes had made. Initially I wondered if it was still working as the wheel didn't move for minutes at a time However, the yacht was still on course, so down to the fact it just didn't need to, brilliant!

Over the summer we have seen that the wheel pilot does far less adjusting and steers a much straighter course. With a following F5 sea previously we noticed that the wave would pick up the stern, the yacht tilt and then change course. At this point the pilot would turn the wheel and bring the yacht back onto the course.

However, following the changes, as soon as the yacht tilts the pilot makes a small adjustment before the yacht veers off course, therefore needing significantly less adjustment than before. This could be down to the gyro compass rather than previous generations of flux gate compasses. The result is a much straighter course steered. RM do say the system has the ability to learn and adjust to different conditions over time.

Overall the changes have made a significant difference to the way the wheel pilot handles the boat and I remain very pleased with the investment. Whilst RM say the RRU is optional, I now think it is essential for a fin keeled yacht if you want to maximise the performance and reduce the amount of work a wheel pilot needs to do.

See attached diagram:

Is there any problem daisychaining either the MFD or Radar via the extra port on the P70 control head? I have all the adapter cables. The P70 cannot see the mfd but the MFD can see the EVO-! components but won't allow autopilot setup.

[CA11] MFD Upgrade

Hi
I have an old C80 MFD, that seems to be on the way out (self reboots & fuzzy screen), and am investigating upgrading.
In conjunction with my C80, I have ST4000+ autohelm, RD218 Radome Scanner, ST50+ Depth & Speed & ST60+ Wind and a Raystar 125 GPS Receiver (see attached pic).
So, if I move to an axiom 9, will any of these existing instruments or radar interface to each other & the new MFD out of the box or will I have to buy or replace, or add extra networking devices?

During this upgrade, I may wish to include AIS transceiver, does your MFD come with such integrated? If not what additional equipment may I need, splitter & transceiver?

Thanks for your help.

[CA11] Creating Raster Charts

$

Hi all,

I have two boats, each with a Raymarine eS78 MFD. One updated to Lighthouse 3, the other on Lighthouse 2 (for now).

Is there any software I can use to draw my own charts? Lighthouse, C-MAP or other? My boating area is in Antarctica so no products on the Raymarine/C-MAP chart store or Navionics.

The relevant underwater hazards we have from our old Garmin units so not fussed about depth informaiton.
If I can get a coastline to appear that'd be great - something to see the zoom scale of the chart at a glance, or quickly see where a hazard (saved as a 'Red X' waypoint) is in relaiton to me. The default world-map is missing a few islands!
The chart, as always, will remain purely an aid to navigation.

Thanks in advance,
Andy.

[CA11] ST60+ Series NEMA 2000 Replacements

I have a dual helm on my Jeanneau SO42DS. The system was upgraded last year wit Axiom 12 and Quantum radar, along with replacing the depth/speed i50 gauge (1) with a NEMA2000 adaptors. I want to upgrade the remaining instruments. The starboard side has a ST60+ WIND (NEMA183) gauge & a ST60+ TRIDATA Autohelm Series gauge. The port side is a slave (I believe) to the starboard side but without the i50 gauge. What are the replacement gauges I need?

[CA11] iPad Master/Slave

$

We have an eS128 MFD on our Beneteau 473 at the chart table. While we are at sea we use an IPad on each helm (Port and Starboard) connected to the eS128. The MFD is on LIghthouse 3 3.10.42

One IPad works fine. I have full control over the MFD. If I connect the second IPad the first one connected becomes the “Master” (full control of the MFD) and the second one a slave (display only with no control). This is understandable as you don’t want two people pushing buttons on different helms at the same time.

The problem is, the units swap as to which one is master and slave by what seems there own accord!

One minute I’m setting up to follow a route and the next the IPad won’t send keystrokes to the MFD and I have to change helms.

The Port IPad does have less WiFi reception from the eS128, (2 out of three bars) but the app always seems responsive. It’s the latest version of the app and IOS.

Is there anyway to “lock” and IPad so it has the “master” role?
Or is two IPads pushing the friendship :)

Hi,

I'm looking for the reference of the cable adaptator to plug my transducer in my new AXIOM 7 RV.

The transducer was pluged in my DSM30 before I bought the AXIOM.

Thank you.
