[CA11] AP needs lubrication

$

I have recently purchased a sailboat with an ST6001 AP. The drive unit has begun making noises - although operating just fine. The noise is consistent with a need for lubrication or wear, not that a part has drastically failed. When I switch the unit to Standby, the noises disappear, so I know the issue is related to the AP.

I'm not sure what manual/document to read to begin to understand the drive unit and what/how to inspect it and/or lubricate.

Any advice or direction would be most appreciated!

TY,

David

[CA11] Short Cables

I am going to install an ev200 auto pilot and get rid of most maybe all 0183 stuff. I am going to install the acu and ev2 in a different location from the rest of the electronics. I want to run a back bone to them and use a terminator to spur connector to one and a tee spur right behind it. IS there a connector to connect the two spur connectors or a very short backbone cable to go between them? Shortest I see is 15 inches. I hate a bunch of coiled extra wire around.

I have looked through the installation manual and do not find any information or descriptions of the choices that are selectable for the above settings. There are several choices available that can be selected. What should my display be set for? My location is Jupiter Florida. I have 2 eS128's and 1 eS75 all on the network.

[CA11] Remanufactured Quantum Q24C does nothing when powered up

I've had a remanufactured Quantum Q24C 18", purchased from Flir, sitting under a bunk for a year. This week I started preparation to install the unit, replacing an older Raymarine analog radar.

However, powering the unit up in my saloon (positive 12V and negative ground) the unit does absolutely nothing. If I'm not mistaken I should be seeing a WiFi network with SSID Quantum_xxxxxxx, yet there is no WiFi network like that.

I am planning on a setup with a WiFi connection between the Q24C and my ES98 chart plotter.

Anything else I should be doing to power this on? PS: after using a powerprobe to inject per I tried jumper leads from the house bank as well. Nothing.

I searched for the available adapter plates, I only see one from the C80 to Axiom 9.

Is there one for the Axiom 7? If not what material is best to make one from?

Thanks for any info.

Hi - I'd like to upgrade this without changing the autopilot computer etc to the Raymarine P70s Autopilot Controller, is that a simple replace or more complex?

Axiom Miracast LG TV not working

$

I have an Axiom 12 RV with LH3 3.10.42. (Issue was the same with prior releases).

I can make it connect wirelessly to my Sony TV at home. It sometimes takes very long to connect but it works even with fairly long distance and thick walls in between. Once connected it stays connected. When connecting there is no code required - I just get a message box on the Axiom asking to confirm the invitation.
That's all good.

Here comes the issue:
On my boat I have a fairly new LG TV with Miracast. (LG24MT49S).
Miracast works perfectly with every Android phone and tablet I have.
These will connect instantly and with no code to enter and no invitation to respond to. They just connect when I turn on the screen projection.

When I try to connect the Axiom it doesn't work.
I have to be VERY close - usually less than 3m/10ft - to be able to se the TV WiDi and when I then try to connect, the TV will display a code which I need to enter on the Axiom to confirm the invitation. (This is also how it's described in the Raymarine setup instructions). BUT when I enter the code the TV will try to connect for 120 seconds and then give up. I have never been able to make it work.
I've done countless factory resets of the Axiom, tried in remote places with no other wifi signals disturbing, updated the TV software - all with no luck.

The Axiom core is Android so it beats me why it works differently from phones/tablets.
Given the TV works perfectly with phones/tablets I doubt the issue is with the TV.
Has anyone made this work with an LG TV?
Obviously the hand-shake on pairing/connection works differently vs the Sony TV, but based on the Raymarine instructions the code hand-shake is the intended way.

I have one other wifi issue with my Axiom. When I use a tablet with Remote Control to connect to the Axiom Wifi it will disconnect from time to time. First it will stop responding to input on the tablet and finally the screen will go black and I have to reconnect. Sometimes, when this happens, I need to go to settings on the Axiom and re-enable remote control.

Any suggestions?

AIS650 Not recognized on network

I bought a Jeanneau with a Raymarine system installed. The Raymarine c120w was not functioning (no display). I replaced the C120w with an Axiom 12.

The components in the system are: 1-Axiom 12, 3-ST70, 1- ST70 Autopilot Controller, Smart Pilot X30, RD418D Digital Radome scanner, AIS650, Shakespeare AS-2 Automatic Coaxial Switch. There is also an Icom IC-M504 connected to the coaxial switch.

The system is working except for allowing the Smart Pilot X30 to be controlled by the MFD (the rudder bar is showing). Can the MFD be configured to control the Smart Pilot X30 and if so how do I do so? Also, AIS650 is not showing up on the Axiom. The staus light on the AIS650 is amber. If I put the AIS650 in receive mode the staus light is blue. I have installed proAIS2 and connected my laptop to the AIS650. When connected to the AIS650 the Diagnostics tab shows a GPS fix however AIS Transceiver MMSI Valid, AIS has transmitted a Position Report, AIS Antenna, and AIS has received a Position Report are all red checks. The status buttons are all gray except for the TX Timeout which is yellow. The Statistics window shows 0 received and 0 transmitted messages on both a & b channels. The Messages window reports multiple TX attempt failed messages.

It appears that an MMSI was never obtained and programmed into the AIS650. There also is no MMSI number in the IC-M504. Would the lack of an MMSI number prevent the AIS650 from receiving reports? What needs to be done to activate the AIS650 and to have it show on the Axiom MFD?

I also attempted to update proAIS2 to the latest version which failed. Attached is a screenshot of the error message

Thanks in advance for your help!

Odd readings from an ST800 on an ST70

$

Hi, thanks in advance for any help in tracking down a pretty strange issue we're having...

I have a 35 foot sailboat that is new to me as of two years ago. Last year the old analog depth transducer which had fed an old Tridata ST50 display and an ST70, failed.

A new DT800 was installed beside the deprecated analog transducer and the DT800 was networked ONLY to the ST70 via an STng backbone. The Tridata is now entirely out of instrument topology.

The first ST800 immediately gave erroneous readings and was replaced by our Marina promptly.

The new ST800 works most of the time. However it will occasionally, and almost always while under way by either sail or power, stop reading the actual depth and display readings such at 2.3, 2.5, 2.7 feet. It will do this for a long time, many minutes to an hour or more. Power cycling the ST70, unplugging and reconnecting the DT800 and terminators or varying boat speed does not have any effect. Occasionally - the readings will return to normal. As this happens, the depth display will flash several times - and then the correct readings will appear. Once in a while - this flashing behaviour will occur, but the correct depth will never appear and the display will return to "2.7" and stay steady. The 2.7 reading will stay even if the ST800 is unplugged - so I wonder if this is a failure mode reading? Or latent signal of some kind?

I have checked for any external problems with the xducer (dove the boat with Scuba) and all appears fine.

The one action that DOES appear to solve the issue (it's worked four times in a row) is to slow the boat when motoring - REVERSE - and then engage forward. Viola! The depth readings return to normal!

We sail in the perilous waters of Georgian Bay and need to have reliable, trustworthy depth readings all the time.

I've worked through your excellent xducer troubleshooting posts and nothing has worked so far.

Anything more to check? I did see a mention of transient, ultra-short voltage drops possibly forcing the DT800 to reboot - but that doesn't seem to explain this behavior?

Further - when the depth readings are wrong - we DO seem to still see temp readings on the ST70 - so unless those are being held in some sort of cache somewhere - the DT800 seems to be "on" all the time.

Thanks for any insight!

SPX-5 Virtual Rudder Indicator Shows Rudder Hard Over

$

I have an SPX-5 on a Catalina 34 sailboat. Other than an initial purchase warranty problem in 2013, it has worked well since 2014. However, this year, the boat falls off course very quickly... about 15 minutes under power on calm water and about 2 minutes if under sail or under any kind of cross wind. The pilot appears to be trying to correct course and the virtual rudder indicator gradually indicates more and more rudder being applied to correct the course but the wheel isn't turning. Eventually the virtual rudder indicator shows the helm hard over and doesn't try to correct course anymore at which time, the boat quickly falls 20 degrees and more off course triggering the "off course" alarm.
I have done the Sea Trial Calibration several times to try to correct the issue and also manually fiddled with some of the Dealer Cal parameters, especially Rudder Gain, Counter Rudder and Auto Trim with no improvement.
Compass position has not changed and the area is clear of interference.

I do not have a rudder reference transducer and have not had one since new. If this would correct the situation, I would gladly install one but why would performance change so dramatically over a year? Also, I note in paragraph 2.9 of the SPX-5 setup manual, it says the rudder reference transducer gives an accurate display of rudder position. I'm not concerned about the display of an accurate position but would hope the rudder reference transducer provides better feedback to the course computer to allow course to be maintained.

so...
1. would a rudder reference transducer solve this problem? If so, what caused the pilot to work well for 5 years.
2. software issue? If so, how can I correct this.
3. do I bite the bullet and get a new autopilot - maybe Evolution-100 (but why buy another Raymarine if my current one has failed after only 5 years?)

I appreciate your comments and assistance

[LW11] ITC-5, Depth Transducer

$

Hi,

I recently added an i70s and ITC-5 to my system, which previously consisted of ST60 Speed, ST60 Depth and i60 Wind.

I have connected the Speed and Wind transducer cables to the ITC-5 and am successfully receiving that data on STNG and ST1.

However, whilst I get Depth data on ST1 with the transducer connected to the ST60 Depth, when I connected the transducer cables to the ITC-5 instead I couldn't get any Depth data on STNG or ST1, and the i70s did not show the ITC-5 as a source for Depth.

Is it possible that my depth transducer is compatible with the ST60 but not with the ITC-5? I think it is a pretty standard Airmar one. Anything else I should try? There was a big magnet clipped on to the depth transducer cable, what does that do?

[CA11] AIS 700 Power problem

Hi - AIS has been working perfectly for many months. On a recent trip it stopped functioning completely - I checked power and its at 28v incoming, checked power cable and I see the same voltage.

Plug USB in and use latest ProAIS2 SW/drivers are installed and I see low power warning in diagnostics - its showing around 8v which I assume is coming from the USB connection.

With USB connected seems to function at least in receive mode just fine, but not transmitting.

What else am I able to check or do you think the unit is faulty?

[CA11] VDC charging of TackTick Remote

How is a 9 VDC battery connected to the TackTick Remote (purchased 2007)? The built-in battery has 4 leads terminating in 2 connectors. How is a 9 VDC battery with 2 connectors used to provide power when the solar cell is not re-charging well?

Thanks.

[CA11] Autopilot drive selection

We have an EV400 autopilot (sail), and an old(er) linear hydraulic drive - it has no manufacturer's name on it. It's sprung a leak, and our hydraulic shop is having trouble curing this leak, even after ordering custom seals. So, before throwing more money at an old unit, we'd like to look at the alternatives.

We have a Macintosh 47 sailboat, performance cruiser, tips the scales at around 38,000lbs. Design displacement is 30,500 lbs. We have a cable/wire steering system, and a separate tiller for the autopilot, so the quadrant is not affected directly. Our current unit is installed on a heavily reinforced bulkhead that is vertical, and runs fore and aft. That would be our preferred installation spot. The current drive has a 9" throw, with it running from 21-1/2" to 30-1/2" from the base. We are 12v.

So, the question is, what unit do we replace it with?

Thanks,
Bill

[CA11] Axiom 9 addition with ES127

I currently have a ES127 , connected to a CP 470 with a M265 L/H Chirp transducer. I can get a good deal on a Axiom 9 RV and wanted to know a few things before I do.
1) How to connect the Es127 to the Axiom and is this necessary.

2) Will the Axiom 9 be able to use my existing CP470 / M265 setup. I do not have room to mount a transom mount transducer because my boat has a large Armstrong bracket.

[CA11] Power supplied to S2 course computer

I am curious about the proper power supply to the S2 course computer.
I have the installation manual, "SmartPilot Series Commissioning Guide".
In this guide, on page 5, under cable length, for distribution panel to SmartPilot computer, is given a confusing list of numbers. I don't get it.
I have a 12 volt, type 1, linear drive. The distance from the distribution panel to the computer is approximately 15 feet one way. It is currently served by a 30 amp circuit breaker with 10 gauge wire to the computer. The wire from the computer to the drive unit is 12 gauge running approximately 10 feet.
Does this seem to be adequate, or should this be upgraded?
I have not experienced any problems with this arrangement but I don't want to be causing a problem from inadequate wiring.
