Is there Really an Issue with Mounting Axiom 9 within 1 M of Compass?

$

The Axiom 9 (E70366) installation sheet (Doc no. 88070-1, 2/17) shows to mount the MFD greater than 1 meter from a binnacle compass. That is essentially impossible on all but the largest sailboats if the MFD is used as the main chart plotter at the helm.

The setup will be as shown in the attached photo with the Axiom 9 replacing the C80 Classic directly above the binnacle compass (0.3 m) away. What issues can I expect? A Mu metal lining in the mounting case is all I can think of at the moment.
Thank You
Dan

Compass Safe Distance for marine electronics

Compass Safe Distance for marine electronics

Compass Safe Distance is defined to be the minimum distance which a marine electronics device may be installed within proximity to a magnetic north seeking device (ex. instrument compass, autopilot fluxgate compass, etc.) without causing deviation in the magnetic field sensed by the magnetic north seeking device. When a value for Compass Safe Distance is not specified by the manufacturer of a marine electronics device, it is generally the device not installed within 3' of a magnetic north seeking device when conditions permit doing so. That said, it is not uncommon for equipment to be installed within the Compass Safe Distance to a vessel's compass located at the helm or binnacle. In such cases, it is recommended that the vessel's compass be corrected for any resulting changes to the sensed deviation field. Most vessel compasses may be adjusted for sensed deviation and will be supplied with instructions addressing how to perform deviation adjustments. Alternatively, the services of a professional compass adjuster may be obtained for such purposes.

Raystar 130 retro kit to C80

So I just purchased a T70133 kit to replace my failed RN300 system. I have a C80, radar, Auto pilot and st6001 controller and the Failed RN300 that I plan to do away with completely on a 22' C-Dory.
It looks simple enough to hook this up except for the fact that my system has neither a D244 junction block or a R55006 that is shown in the instructions diagram. Instead it has a generic marine terminal bus that the wires from all said components are screwed in to. There is not a dedicated power wire going in to the terminal so I must assume that power is being supplied from either the Auto pilot, C80 or RN300.
I am not sure of how to disconnect the current power input so that I can supply power through the SeaTalkng converter to the system. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

About a year ago I bought an 895 multi function and used it as a standalone GPS on my sailboat. Now I am adding and I 50 depth and and I 50 speed indicator. The place where the old depth transducer was has 24° of deadrise. My questions are:
1) which transducers are best suited for my application?
2) Will these components all work together properly?
3) what's the best hook up schematic for the system?
4) do I need any other components?
Thank you in advance, Jeff

At the software update page for the 170s it says to "Select the software update below depending on which Multifunction Display (MFD) you will be using to perform the Remote Update." Our MFD is the Axiom 9 which is not a given option. How shall we proceed?

Over the weekend my e7 screen ran into trouble, it's screen taking on a greenish hue and appearing to be made up of many horizontal lines instead of a smooth high resolution.

I can see everything (I think) but it's not optimal.

I wiggled wires, etc, but to no avail.

Is this cause for repair?

Firmware upgrade for X-5 Autopilot VIA C80 Classic

Hello,

I have an X-5 autopilot running firmware v1.2. I need to upgrade the firmware to the current v3.05 to take advantage of the fixes listed in the change log, specifically those related to the handling of Seatalk and Seatalk NG. However, I have a C Series Classic C80 plotter, and for some reason there is for firmware image for upload to the X-5 using this specific plotter.

http://www.raymarine.com/view/?id=3770

My questions:

Is this firmware available somewhere so I can upgrade the X_5 using the C80?

If not, is it possible to upgrade the firmware in the X-5 in any other way? Possible an interface using an adapter and a PC?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

a97 mfd and e66020 transducer

I have recently installed new electronics an a97 and a95 mfd's quantum radar; an E22158 st adapter and a transducer adapter cable for an existing e66020 transducer (fish finder, speed, temp). My question is that when I go to the transducer selection page it gives a large list of transducers to choose from. None of them is an exact match for the above mentioned transducer, how should I select, I have tried several and they all appear to work. Also will all functions work (temp and speed)?

Second question, is there a new transducer that could replace the e66 using the existing fairing?

Thanks,
Phil

I like the unit, but can't get the voltage to display. It only shows a -.-
First time I called in they told me to wait for the software update in early June. Installed the updates last week and nothing changed. Then I called in again and was told I need a Nema 2000 transmitter ?? What is that?
There are a few other times in the GPS part of the display that won't show accurate numbers or show a -.- instead of DTW or COG while navigating to a waypoint.
Does anyone know what I have to do to get the battery voltage to show on the Overlay Data?
Thanks for any help

Can I assume that my recently purchased Raymarine product has current software?

Can I assume that my recently purchased Raymarine product has current software?

Like most manufacturers of consumer electronics (marine electronics, mobile devices, computers, televisions, etc.), Raymarine products are programmed with the latest available product software during the production process. However, should a software update for a consumer electronics product be released after the product was manufactured, then it is quite possible that the software within the purchased product will not have been updated with this software. Where possible, Raymarine will update inventory within its warehouses with any critical software updates prior to shipment to Raymarine distributors and dealers. Accordingly, it is considered to be a best practice for purchasers of consumer electronics to determine the version of software installed within newly purchased products, and then to update the product with the latest available Raymarine product software updates. The software within most Raymarine products is designed to be easily updated by their owners using software update files downloaded from Raymarine's website which are then copied to a memory card using a computer. Raymarine's latest generation of Wi-Fi equipped MFDs also support downloading software updates directly from Raymarine's website.

How to update product software when MFD lacks a SeaTalkng or Ethernet interface

Most Raymarine products featuring an Ethernet or SeaTalkng communications interface are designed to be updated via the system's Data Master a/c/e/eS/gS-Series MFD, Data Master C/E-Series Widescreen MFD, Data Master GPM400, or Data Master E-Series Classic MFD. With the exception of SR50 Sirius Satellite Weather/Radio Receivers, the C-Series Classic MFDs cannot update the software of any other products. Links to download product software as well as for installation instructions, may be found on each product's respective Software Update web page.

Raymarine products may also be updated by:
- Raymarine dealers equipped to perform this service … recommend consulting your dealer prior to bringing equipment to the dealer
- Certified Raymarine Installers
- Raymarine’s Product Repair Center.

The above listed resources may also be used to update Raymarine product software in systems which do not feature a Raymarine MFD which is capable of performing remote product software updates to devices within an Ethernet or SeaTalkng / NMEA 2000 network.

ST1 vs STng for SPX-5 and p70R

$

Good day,

I have recently purchased a boat that has an all Raymarine setup which I am modifying slightly. My current set up is-

Into multiple D244 ST1 busses-
-SPX-5 course computer ST1
-ST40 Bidata ST1
-S100 ST1
-p70R (recently upgraded from ST6002) via a ST1-STng adapter cable

From the D244 ST busses via a ST1-STng adapter cable-
ST1-STng converter

Into the ST1-STng converter is currently an e95 MFD white spur, 12 vdc white spur and the ST1-STng yellow adapter cable from the D244 busses

From e95 MFD NMEA0183-
T122 Wireless interface-
T101 wireless wind
There is also a Raymarine HD Color radar

I recently added the p70R Autopilot control head and the T122 wireless interface. Because the p70R is on the ST1 network, I had to update the p70R software by plugging it directly into the ST1-STng converter, updating and then plugging back into the ST1 network.
I have a Ray218 VHF that was wired into the NMEA 0183 from the e95 for DSC GPS position. I had to use the NMEA 0183 output from the e95 for the T122 for wind information to and from the e95.
The system seems to work now, however, the p70R seems to be lacking some functionality. When I attempt to use the Seatrial Wizard, it won't allow me to. In the basic setup, the only option given is language selection. I can't input any other information for the autopilot setup. I also don't have GPS for the Ray218 VHF anymore.

Here is my proposed setup which would include a second ST1-STng converter. I believe I would have to buy a VHF-NMEA 0183 converter kit (E70196), a blue backbone cable (A06036) and a white spur to stripped end cable for the course computer (A06044)

Into a first ST1-STng converter-

SPX-5 course computer STng white spur (3m spur cable not long enough to go directly to p70R)
p70R STng white spur
ST40 bidata and S100 into a D244 bus then a yellow ST1-STng spur adapter cable
Blue Backbone cable to second ST1-STng converter-

Into the second ST1-STng converter-

Blue backbone from the first ST1-STng converter
e95 white spur
12vdc red/black power cable white spur
VHF -NMEA 0183 yellow adapter cable to give GPS position to the Ray218 VHF
The T122 would remain connected to the NMEA 0183 output from the e95.

If my thinking is correct, the p70R and the SPX-5 course computer would then show up on the diagnostics page on the e95 and both be part of the STng network. I would then have full functionality of the p70R. Only the ST40 bidata and the S100 would be on the ST1 network. The Ray218 would receive GPS from the VHF-NMEA 0183 adapter cable.

1. Is this unnecessarily complicating the wiring?
2. Is there actually anything to be gained by putting the p70R and the SPX-5 course computer on the STng network vs the ST1 network?
3. Would the simplest solution to getting GPS position to the Ray218 VHF be to use a blue backbone cable from the current ST1-STng converter to a VHF-NMEA 0183 converter kit (basically just a second ST1-STng converter with adapter cable)?

Thanks

Can I easily connect a Si-Tex Class B AIS & Splitter to my Raymarine system?

$

Hi all,
I have a neighbor on a powerboat that just offered to trade me a New in Box, Si-Tex Metadata Class B AIS transceiver and NiB Si-Tex Metadata Antenna Splitter for an oversized, unused Manson anchor that was "extra gear" in a shed when I bought my used Catalina. Since I have only the AIS receiver in the Standard Horizon 2150 I am really hoping that this is an easily doable addition that will net me Class B AIS for FREE!

My 2014 Catalina came with a full compliment of Raymarine gear:
a single Raymarine e125,
Raymarine 4kW 24" HD Color Radome,
a single p70 head for my ACU400 Actuator,
three i70 display heads,
DST200,
EV-1,
iTC5 converter,
one HS5 Switch,
a Raymarine SR150 Sirius WX module,
Fusion MS-AV700i w remote head,
and the Standard Horizon 2150 VHF with receive only AIS
Everything works perfectly together.

So my obvious question is:
can I add the Si-Tex AIS modules into this system with no issues? How?

I spoke to Si-Tex and they recommended using NMEA2000 into the SeaTalk backbone but could not offer specifics as to how. He did say that he had heard that at some point a couple of years back there was a Raymarine software issue that forced using NMEA0183 but he thought had been solved since.
This free gear swap is too good to pass up unless this won't work or be too problematic...
Can you guys help me out here and give me your thoughts on the complexity or more importantly, any issues I might run into?
How To steps would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks very much for any help you can offer!

Installation of 19.03 on e97 fails

I've tried twice to install 19.03 on my e97, and both times I've gotten a validation error for the rayatom_upgrade 02 and 07 modules. I've downloaded and extracted the software twice, and even changed MicroSD cards. File date for 02 is 5 Apr 17 and for 07 is 7 Apr 17. Checked the md5sum on both and the sums did not match the .sig files (if that's what you're using). I'm not sure what else to try. Thanks.

Axiom ?'s

Hello,

I am ready to upgrade my plotter, and am intrigued by the axiom series. Capabilities vs cost seem unmatchable. This line seems to be marketed heavily toward the recreational fisherman... is there any reason an Axiom MFD (thinking the 9) wouldn't be a smart choice on my Seafarer 37 sailboat?

A few questions, as the number of configurations available gets quite confusing... I don't think I really need any of the cutting edge downvision/realvision sonar features available, but my current Datamarine depth instrument will be in need of upgrade soon. If I later connect a more modern transducer to my MNEA 2000 network, would the E70366 (plotter only model) display depth? I couldn't find this addressed anywhere among all the descriptions of the more fancy sonar capabilities.

For what it's worth, it seems that retailers are a little confused by the different configurations also... Defender advertises the 70366 as supporting the " full range of Raymarine accessories including.... CHIRP sonar" not true, correct??

I would like to mount flush in a pod-like compartment and am trying to determine the depth required. In the Axiom Brochure, the specs page shows 6.97" from face to the back turn of the cable. The specs page in the installation manual has a rear mount diagram that is either in error or way out of scale. It does show face to back of cable as 7.01", which is virtually the same as the brochure, but it also lists C + D (face to back of bracket) as just 4.28", though the diagram shows the cable and bracket protruding roughly the same distance back. It looks like a right angle connector would give the minimum required clearance.... what would this measurement be exactly (unless the diagram is very out of scale, 6.22" doesn't seem possible), and what right angle connector would I use?

Thanks very much in advance for whatever light you can shed!

Replace C120 Classic with E120 Classic?

$

I recently bought a "new" boat (Bayliner 4550) with a C120 Classic MFD. I really like it. IT's not as fancy as new models, but it meets my needs for cruising in South Puget Sound. But, it is mounted in the Pilothouse and there is no nav at all on the flybridge (aside from a compass).

I understand that the C120 can't be linked to another display, and was wondering if a used E120 Classic would be a "Plug and Play" replacement for the C120 in the pilothouse. I think I could then add a Seatalk Network Switch and a second display on the flybridge.

The current system does have a Raymarine 300DSM, Raymarine GPS antenna (not sure what model right now) and 24" Raymarine radar dome.

Will that work, or am I missing something?

I'm not prepared right now to replace the whole system.

Heading COG Mismatch (E125/ACU400/EV-1/P70/I70)

Hello,

Most of the time, my heading and COG is accurate, however on occasion the heading will be off by 90 degrees or more on all instruments. I began to experience this problem with my old S3 and Fluxgate. I first replaced the Fluxgate and had the same issue. I then removed the S3/Fluxgate/NG converter (now all NG network with exception of NMEA AIS) and replaced with an ACU400 and EV-1, the problem still exists.

Photos attached show the problem. These were approx 5 mins apart with the autopilot set to a fix heading (note autopilot did not turn the boat when heading changed so it seems the correct somewhere but displays incorrectly).

Not sure what to do next, any thoughts?

In Hull Transducer

Chuck,
I have a dealer installed, P-74 transducer in the hull of my bass boat, that is my A127, 2D transducer. I'm not really impressed with its performance at any speed and wondered if the P-79 would do a better job.
I also have a new P-319, but no one is willing to install a thru-hull in a bass boat. Looking for some professional advice.
Thanks

Axiom 7 question

I just purchased an Axiom 7DV with transom transducer CPT-100DVS. Not installed yet. Right out of the box I notice "Note: The transducer is not suitable for mounting on vessels where the transom is aft of the propeller". My boat is a sailboat with inboard engine, the transom is aft of everything. I contacted West Marine, where I purchased the unit, and they said the transducer should work fine if installed in-hull. Will this work? What is the down side? Will it work on the my transom? If this one won't work, is there a designed for in-hull transducer that will work with the Axiom? What is the down side of that? I am impressed with the Axiom and I want to make it work, but if there is no reasonable solution, I must return it to WM. Pulling the boat out of water is not an option.
