Testing an instrument speed through water transducer

$

0
The following procedure may be used to testing an instrument speed through water transducer:

- Verify that the transducer’s paddle wheel is free of marine growth and rotates freely on its shaft
- Power down the instrument or iTC-5
- Disconnect the GREEN and SHIELD transducer leads from the instrument display or instrument pod.
- Connect a multimeter to the GREEN and SHIELD transducer leads and configure the multimeter to measure continuity or resistance.
- Slowly rotate the transducer paddle wheel by hand. Note that as the paddle wheel is rotated, the multimeter should alternate between an open circuit and a closed circuit with each quarter turn. As such one complete revolution of the paddle wheel should open and close the circuit four times.

Should the multimeter respond as indicated above, then the speed sensor element of the transducer would be deemed operational. If not, then the transducer has failed and should be replaced.

Autopilot Remotes

Notes on the Raymarine website about the IOS App indicate autopilot control does not include activating or deactivating the autopilot. You can infer from this you can change the course however in the version of software on my MFD (a68 V13.37) you cannot control the autopilot in any manner. What is correct?

Next, are there any options for an autopilot remote other than the Seatalk wireless remotes which will require the STNG to ST converter to work?

Waypoints: can't goto or show on chart

e7D with 17.45 software. If I am on a chart display and select Menu, My Data, Waypoints, and then select a Waypoint I can choose Goto, or Display on Chart and it works fine. If I try the same thing from the Home Screen (My Data, Waypoints) I am unable to Goto or Display on Chart.

The Waypoint layout/display is slightly different depending on how I get there (Home vs; Chart/Menu); there is an option to Show on Chart in one, but not the other. Maybe that's somehow connected to this issue?

Connecting to Horizon GX2200 AIS, GPS, DSC?

I was able to connect the AIS signal from my Standard Horizon GX2200 VHF to my e7D and can see all of the AIS data on the MFD (there appears to be a dedicated AIS NEMA 0183 line on the GX2200).

While planning I was wondering if there is any value in also connecting the DSC data from the VHF to the MFD, and the MFD output to the VHF? I assume that would also provide a second GPS/Location value for the MFD, but I'm not sure that would do anything?

Any thoughts on this would be much appreciated.

DRIVE STOPPED troubleshooting

Hello all!

A friend of mine has a large schooner with an Evolution autopilot system installed.

The ACU is the ACU-200 (I believe) with a p70 display, driving a Jefa 200 Nm drive unit with a sprocket that connects via chain to the steering gear (http://www.jefa.com/steering/products/dr...50nm.htm). There is a rudder reference sensor attached to the steering gear that provides rudder position feedback.

We're encountering a problem where the autopilot will steer successfully for a while and then give up with a DRIVE STOPPED message, somewhat randomly. Some data points we've collected so far:

* Most of our autopilot usage has been motoring in calm to light conditions, with little load on the rudder as a result.
* The unit steers well and steers consistently up until the moment it drops out.
* Once it drops out, if it is reactivated it does seem to drop out more frequently, within minutes. If the boat is hand steered for a while, it seems to last longer when reactivated (we've been very scientific about gathering this data as you can tell).
* Tuning responsiveness has little impact.
* The system was installed a year+ ago, but as we have no MFD aboard the software has not been updated since then. I plan to perform that update at some point soon.

We're now looking to attack this problem and are looking for any troubleshooting suggestions or settings we can tune. Or were there any bugs in the older Evolution software which could cause this problem that updating might resolve?

Streaming error on a95

I am setting up the remote control app on my Samsung Table S2. I changed the default SSID and password on the a95 mfd. My tablet sees the network and logs in with the selected password.

When I start remote control app,I immediately get an error, "unable to stream from ", with a long MAC address. The message repeats, and I cannot fix any settings in the program.

E120 Classic Periodic Restart

Hi, I have an E120 which restarts itself about once every two hours of run time. There is no apparent reason for these restarts, they are just random while running. I assume it's a voltage dip possibly or maybe a software issue. Do you have a set of troubleshooting steps I should try?

Thanks.

MARPA and SHS

$

I’ve got a legacy installation consisting of two E80 displays, Raymarine GPS and radar, an S2 AP Course Computer, fluxgate compass, and an 8002 AP control head.

The fluxgate is connected to the AP Course Computer, and the AP Course Computer to the 8002 via Seatalk, and then via Seatalk to an E80. The E80s are connected via Seatalk HS.

I bought and installed an external gyro (“Smart Heading System”) to improve the AP function. The only currently connected output from the SHS is a 2-wire connection to the Rate Gyro port on the AP Course Computer. The fluxgate remains connected to the AP Course Computer, not the SHS.

As expected this allows the AP to AutoLearn. AP performance is somewhat improved.

A second benefit I hoped for was improved MARPA performance. Is this single SHS->AP connection adequate to gain that? In rereading the manual I see mention of additionally connecting the SHS to an E80 via NMEA. I have not done that. What is the benefit of that connection--to get improved MARPA performance? Can the connection be to either E80 or must it be the E80 connected to the radar?

If NMEA will improve MARPA, how significant will that be? Both E80 NMEA ports are already used (depth sounder and AIS), so I’d need to invest in a mux to connect the SHS. Will the MARPA improvement justify that expenditure?

Thanks.

Quantum radome not communicating with a/c/e/eS/gS-Series MFD

If previously paired to the Quantum radome, the MFD's Wi-Fi is configured ON, the power circuit supplying the Quantum radome is switched ON, and the MFD is unable to communicate with the Quantum radome, then please note that communications can often easily be restored by switching the power circuit supplying the Quantum radome OFF and then ON again to force the Quantum radome to restart.

Should the communications problem persist, then the following procedure may be used to troubleshoot a/c/e/eS/gS-Series MFD Wi-Fi communications with a Quantum radome:
1 - verify that the MFD has been updated with v16.47 or later a/c/e/eS/gS-Series MFD software
2 - verify the SSID and passcode of the Quantum radome (this information is printed on the label affixed to the bottom of the Quantum radome, the package's label, and the product's literature)
3 - if interfacing with an a-Series MFD, verify that the MFD features a Wi-Fi communications interface. MFDs lacking a Wi-Fi communications interface will not support the following command sequence: HOME->SET-UP->WIRELESS CONNECTIONS->WI-FI.
4 - verify that the MFD's Wi-Fi (HOME->SET-UP->WIRELESS CONNECTIONS->WI-FI->WI-FI) has been configured to ON
5 - verify that the MFD's Wi-Fi Communications circuitry is operational by verifying that one of the Raymarine Mobile Apps can communicate with the MFD
6 - switch the power circuit supplying the Quantum radome OFF
7 - switch the power circuit supplying the Quantum radome ON
8 - command the MFD to pair with the Quantum radome (HOME->SET-UP->EXTERNAL DEVICES->SYSTEM SETTINGS->EXTERNAL DEVICES->QUANTUM RADAR->PAIR WITH QUANTUM RADAR). Be certain pay attention to letter case and accuracy of the SSID and Passcode entered
9 - select the Connect to Quantum Radar dialog's CONNECT button
10 - Open a page featuring the Radar application (ex. HOME->RADAR)
11 - Select the TX (to transmit) or ON (to enter Standby mode) button within radar state dialog within the Radar application

Should the procedure specified above not correct the problem, should no other MFD be paired with the Quantum radome, should the system only contain one radar transmitter, and should voltage test of the circuit supplying the Quantum radome with power reveal no issues, then it would be recommended that the Quantum radome be sent to Raymarine’s Product Repair Center to be bench tested/serviced.

Using AIS650/500 Silent Mode leads

$

The AIS650/500's silent mode leads are primarily intended to support placing the AIS transceiver into an out of silent mode within
- systems in which the Raymarine MFDs have been switched OFF, yet there is a desire to control whether the AIS will transmit or be silent
- systems feature third party chartplotting products
- systems in which the operator prefers to use a switch to control the Silent Mode state.

In systems featuring Raymarine MFDs, the Silent Mode leads would not typically be used, would be insulated to prevent a closed circuit, and the MFD would be used to control the Silent Mode state. However, should the AIS650's Silent Mode leads be interfaced to a switch, then it would be recommended that
- the AIS650 not be interfaced to the system via SeaTalkng/NMEA 2000 communications protocol
- the AIS650/500 instead be interfaced to the MFD to support one way NMEA 0183 communications (AIS650/500 -> MFD).
- alternatively, the AIS650/500 instead be interfaced to the SeaTalkng/NMEA 2000 backbone to support one way NMEA 0183 communications (AIS650/500 -> backbone) using a NMEA 0183 to SeaTalkng/NMEA 2000 data bridging device (ex. Actisense NGW-1-STNG.
- all control of Silent Mode will be performed via the switch.

However, when the Silent Mode leads are interfaced to a switch, the following behavior should be expected:
- with the MFD's power circuit switched OFF, the AIS650/500 will enter and remain in Silent Mode when a closed circuit is created with the Silent Mode leads.
- with the MFD's power circuit switched OFF, the AIS650/500 will enter Transmit and will remain in Transmit Mode when an open circuit is created with the Silent Mode leads and the AIS650's GPS receiver is able to maintain a GPS position FIX. Should the AIS650/500 lose its GPS position FIX, then the AIS650/500 will remain enter Silent Mode and remain in Silent Mode until the AIS650/500 has reacquired a GPS position FIX.
- with the MFD's power circuit switched ON and the AIS650/500 in Transmit Mode, the AIS650/500 will enter and remain in Silent Mode when a closed circuit is created with the Silent Mode leads. At that time, the MFD's Silent Mode state will also be changed to ON.
- with the MFD's power circuit switched ON and the AIS650/500 in Silent Mode, the AIS650/500 will remain in Silent Mode when an open circuit is created with the Silent Mode leads. The AIS650/500 may be commanded to enter Transmit Mode by configuring the MFD's Silent Mode state to OFF.

Transducer In and Out / Broken Clip

$

I went out on Saturday and about half way through the day my A98 all of a sudden turned it self off or went out. I pressed the power button and it came back on and it started repeatedly indicating that the transducer was not available. I don't remember the exact error but something like transducer of the type not available. It started going out about every 10-20 minutes and would stay off for about a minute each time and was happening when I was drifting a ledge. Issues continued and eventually started happening about once a minute at times. I didn't want to shut off the system, motor and batteries while 30 miles offshore so I waited until I got back to the dock. Reset everything and sat there for 10 minutes without issue. Also, turned everything on sitting in my driveway for about an hour and didn't notice it losing connection anymore. However, while cleaning the boat I noticed that the transducer did not appear to be latching down. I have the CPT-100 which come as part of the package with my A98 MFD. I have had a P66 on my previous boat which was notorious for popping up so I check it every time I pull out and what ever happened occurred on this trip as it was latched that morning prior to launching. Also, while sitting in my driveway, I moved the transducer up and down, waved my foot and hands in front of it and it marked as if there were fish under it as usual and never dropped out from the A98.

Had the P66 on my old c-series for 6 years and popped up about every other trip. Never gave out on me like this one in less than a year as far as the latching clip which appears to now be broken. There were no incidents that I can point to where I hit anything so I am not sure why it failed. Also, hoping that the weirdness with the dropping in and out was related to this. Supposed to head out on a 2 week trip on the 18th and hope this is a simple fix.

Attached are some photos of the transducer and mount.

dodging obstacles while in Track mode (EV-200)

When the AP is in track mode, and I need to dodge an obstacle (e.g. lobster pot) I either put the AP in standby on use the +/-10 key. I will then put the AP back in track mode. To lessen the aggressive turns by the AP to return to original track I reset the XTE. The operation requires numerous button pushes and confirmations--seem very clumsy. Seems like there ought to be an more elegant method to dodge a lobster pot and to resume the track from the current position.

AIS500

Hi, I recently added a new AIS500 to my all Raymarine system. AIS is working fine with one exception. When the AIS is on the boat icon on my C80 changes orientation while underway. The boat icon moves sideways or backwards.

When I shut off the AIS it re-orientates itself to the correct heads up and moves through the map correctly.

I cannot figure out what is causing this. The AIS was hooked up by a registered technician and appears to function normally.

I do have a X30 autopilot hooked up and that is working without any issues.
thanks for you help.

I have installed a new EV-1, ACU-400 and p70R.
When I go into auto, it holds a good course for about 20 seconds and then starts S turns up to 12 degrees port and starboard. I have not installed the B60 transducer yet as the boat will be hauled next week.
Would that cause the problem.
I have downloaded v 17 software.

The C70 is showing only vertical lines on the screen. I'm assuming a loose ribbon cable connector but don't know. Is the unit still being repaired? What model would replace this and be compatible with the DSM 300? I seem to recall that the C series radar was not digital. Is that correct? Thank you and have a good day.

I recently installed the software update via ad card as per instructions on your website. Everything installed and I put my original card back in and rebooted. When I am Attempting to build a route using the dock to dock auto routing, there is no option to use this feature, it only allows me to use waypoints or manually build routes. How do I get this feature to activate?
