The Evolution autopilot R4 software update, whether installed separately or as part of the a/c/e/eS/gS-Series R17 or later software update requires that a Full commissioning (Dockside Wizard, Deviation Cruise, and reconfiguration of settings (compass offset, Pilot Response, etc.) be performed after the the Evolution R4 software has been installed. When installing the Evolution R4 software update, the EV-1/2 Sensor Core software must be updated prior to updating the Evolution ACU. If updating the Evolution autopilot's software via the software update files included within the a/c/e/eS/gS-Series MFD, the MFD will coordinate the order in which the Evolution autopilot components are updated.

Updating the Evolution Autopilot's software will necessitate that the Dockside Wizard be executed again, had the wizard been executed previously. The Evolution software update will cause deviation data stored within the autopilot to be deleted, necessitating that the autopilot once again create its deviation table and report the maximum detected deviation (see the referenced FAQ below regarding the short cruise to establish deviation).

Autopilot systems utilizing a heading sensor detecting magnetic north must be calibrated for sensed deviation at several points of compass. In vessels having Evolution Autopilot systems, this is accomplished by taking the vessel on a short cruise within a specified operating speed and putting the vessel through some turns. This action permits the autopilot system to create a deviation table and upon completion report the maximum deviation sensed. Please click here to view a FAQ addressing this subject.

In response to customer concerns regarding the need for a progress indicator showing percentage completion of the autopilot's deviation sensing feature, the latest p70/p70R Autopilot Control Head software now includes the "Detecting Magnetics" feature which provides a visual indication the percentage of completion. This feature also provides a visual indication of whether the vessel is operating with the speed range required for operation of the autopilot's deviation sensing feature. Should the vessel's speed be too slow or too fast for operation of the autopilot's deviation sensing feature, then the indicator will be colored red. Should the vessel's speed be within the allowable range for operation of the autopilot's deviation sensing feature, then the indicator will be colored green.
